Six cylinders or bust!

They’re absolutely great cars. With the 4 cylinder not the quickest, but that doesn’t impact the handling or the exterior. If the car has very little rust that’s a very fair price and a sound investment! It seems mechanically sound when seeing what the owner has done to it.

Had this been local to me I’d visited this seller.

I’m really tempted. Really really tempted. I have a bit of experience with BMW 4 cylinders, they feel faster than they actually are to me. This particular one is way below my actual budget. I have the urge to see it in person.

Insurance is going to bend my over their knees haha. All the six cylinder E30s seem to have disappeared in my area. The only ones are expensive convertibles.

I might actually do. The timing isn’t the best right now but clean E30s don’t really pop up that often anymore.

Well, in this case you can try and claim that it is a practical and slow family car, not a sporty RWD at all (“No sir, I am a responsible young adult, I wouldn’t even know what drifting is.”).

Is insurance also power based for young drivers in Germany? I remember being staggered how cheap it would be to insure a e.g. Smart Roadster when compared to an equally old MX-5.

The first and second year of insurance are mindblowingly expensive for young people, you’re looking at about €900-€1.300,-, depending on what vehicle you want to insure. Insurance is measured not only in power output but also on how common the car is. They argue that more cars from the same type = higher chance of an accident with that particular model. I’d probably ask my parents to insure it as their second car and pay them. I sure as hell won’t let me eff over from an insurance.

Go find a unicorn then! Something like a Fiat 850 Spider should work, no power and not a lot around.

I got lucky as I went to the same insurer my parents use, and I’d been registered as an occasional driver on their insurance for a couple of years, so I’m paying close to the minimum right now (€600 for liability, including legal aid and breakdown coverage in Europe).

Be glad you’re not in the UK though, have you ever seen the episode where Top Gear attempts to find the best car for a 17yo? Those yearly quotes were multiple times what the vehicle was worth.

Just do it then. Take it for a test drive I mean. No strings attached.

It indeed seems to be very clean, and the owner did a lot to it, so this could be a unique opportunity.

I would probably get some sort of discount with the insurer my parents use. It’s not cheap either way, that’s for sure. I wonder how people can afford a car in the UK with insane rates.

They put it on their parents’ insurance as well. ;)

And afaik it gets (a lot) cheaper after a certain age, but perhaps one of the UK Oppos will come and educate us.

It’s very clean. Price seems nice. I’d buy it. If you don’t like it, you can export it the US. It is legal now by a few months, and clean E30 wagons go for damn near $10,000 here, though the export process isn’t the cheapest and being a 4-cyl might knock the price down a bit.

I’ll have had my driver’s license for two years next month and I have been insured for my parent’s car for 1 3/4 years. I hope that somehow counts.

Hm.. exporting E30 Tourings sounds intersting. You can always swap other BMW 6 cylinders in the E30 with ease. If I had the money I would seriously consider exporting Tourings.

$10k is a bit steep though. They peaked high when the earliest ones came of age, then there was a big influx and prices dropped.

I shipped an impossibly clean 325i Touring to the US (Texas) in 2014. It did have an automatic, but that car was exceptionally clean. I believe it sold for about $7500 or so, on BAT. In hindsight we could’ve done more to market it better, but still.

It should, and having your parents insure it is a good back-up. Go look at it, and before you know it, you’ll have to change your name to M40B18.

Was it this one? http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1989-b…

I saw a clean red one on CL here in San Antonio, TX a few months ago asking $10k. No idea what it actually went for.

Yes, that’s the one. The 325e badge was wrong, it was an actual 325i. No such thing as a 325e Touring.
